Volkswagen will issue a recall on 2011-2012 Jetta sedans after an investigation found that protruding exhaust pipe tips caused several people to be burned on their legs after brushing against them. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Volkswagen of America Inc. will inspect and replace exahust pipe tips as necessary free of charge.
30,294 vehicles are affected by the recall. The vehicles had a stainless steel exhaust pipe tip installed after importation that has made them stick out farther than original factory-installed exhaust pipes. When the car has been on and running for sometime, a serious burn could result.
