Easterling’s suicide changes federal NFL lawsuit

Posted on Thursday, April 26th, 2012 at 6:16 pm

The suicide of former Atlanta Falcons safety Ray Easterling will change one of the more than five dozen concussion lawsuits against the NFL. His lawyer announced his lawsuit will be changed from personal injury to a wrongful death case. Easterling was one of the lead plaintiffs in the first wave of lawsuits filed against the league.

Easterling was found dead in his Virginia home due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was 62. Friends and family say his memory had begun to deteriorate six months prior to his suicide.

Sixty one concussion lawsuits have been filed by more than 1,200 former NFL players against the league for what they say is negligence, concealment of information, carelessness, and intentional misconduct  regarding the long-term effects of concussions.

Woman wins settlement in anthrax attacks

Posted on Tuesday, November 1st, 2011 at 4:47 pm

A settlement between the widow of a 63 year-old man who died in the 2001 anthrax attacks and the United States government has been reached. While the details of the settlement have not been released, the woman was initially demanding $50 million when she filed the wrongful death lawsuit in 2003.

She claims the government is to blame for her husband’s death because it failed to safely secure the disease at a military laboratory. An Army scientist was later accused of being behind the deadly anthrax attack. Five people died and seventeen fell ill when anthrax-laced letters were sent to two senators and a handful of major media outlets.

He was a photography editor and was the first to die after being exposed to the disease when a letter was sent to the publishing office of the National Enquirer.
