Police arrest man on 8th DWI offense

Posted on Wednesday, December 28th, 2011 at 8:10 pm

A Minneapolis man received his eighth drunk driving arrest in Clark County last week.

The 47 year-old driver lead the Clark County sheriff’s department and the Wisconsin State Patrol on a high speed chase that lasted for almost half an hour. Officers chased the man on Highway 29 after he refused to pull over for speeding. He reached speeds up to 110 mph as he drove through rural Wisconsin.

Law enforcement was able to stop him after laying down tire spikes. He is currently in the Clark County jail facing charges of speeding, fleeing from police, driving with a revoked license, and driving while intoxicated.

Ban on all cellphone use while driving proposed

Posted on Tuesday, December 20th, 2011 at 5:46 pm

Last week, the National Transportation Safety Board proposed a nationwide ban on all cellphone and other portable electronics use while driving. According to a survey it conducted of 6000 Americans, a fifth admitted to have texted or emailed while behind the wheel.

The rise in fatal accidents caused by distracted drivers has raised concerns for many. The board cites a deadly accident that occurred last year in Missouri when a teenage driver received almost a dozen text messages in as many minutes just before causing a multi-car pileup. He died along with a 15 year-old.

NTSB does not have the power to enforce this ban, but its recommendations are significant to congressional and state lawmakers as well as federal regulators.

Elevator accident kills woman in Manhattan

Posted on Wednesday, December 14th, 2011 at 6:33 pm

A freak elevator accident this morning claimed the life of a 41 year-old woman who was on her way to work in a Manhattan office building. She was walking into a first floor elevator when it suddenly began to ascend, crushing her between the car and the shaft wall, killing her.

Two people were inside the elevator when the accident occurred. Firefighters were able to safely rescue them after the elevator became stuck between the first and second floors. They were taken to the hospital for psychological trauma, but were not physically hurt.

Inspection records from the summer show that a defect was found in one of the elevators. An investigation will be conducted to find what caused the malfunction.

Our deepest sympathies are with the family and friends of the victim.

Toxic substances found in apple juice

Posted on Tuesday, December 6th, 2011 at 6:57 pm

The results of a Consumer Reports investigation shows that dangerous levels of the toxic substance arsenic is in apple juice.

These claims contradict the FDA’s statement that arsenic found in juices is organic and “essentially harmless.” Consumer Reports discovered that inorganic arsenic, a carcinogen, is in apple and grape juices at levels that exceed federal drinking water standards. 10% of the juices sampled from five brands had these high levels of arsenic. One in four juices contained high levels of lead.

Inorganic arsenic is known to cause many types of cancer, including bladder, skin, and lung cancer. It can also increase one’s risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and immunodeficiencies.
