Man convicted in fatal crash

Posted on Wednesday, April 28th, 2010 at 6:33 am

A 20-year-old man was found guilty of second-degree reckless homicide Tuesday for a single-vehicle accident in December that killed one passenger and injured another, authorities said. The man entered a no-contest plea to the charge, and as part of the plea agreement, several other charges were dropped. The Waukesha County, Wis., circuit judge will consider the other charges when determining the sentencing, however. The man could face up to 15 years in prison and 10 years of extended supervision afterward.

The accident occurred when the driver lost control of the vehicle, which left the road and entered a ditch, reports said. The vehicle struck a tree after flipping several times, ejecting a 23-year-old man from the vehicle. Emergency responders pronounced him dead on the scene. A 19-year-old female passenger sustained injuries to her hip, her elbow and her face, reports said.

A local pilot is in critical condition after a small plane crash late Thursday afternoon near the Baraboo-Wisconsin Dells Airport, authorities said. The plane was severely damaged, authorities said, and the man had to be extricated from the wreckage. He suffered a collapsed lung, facial contusions and multiple fractures, authorities said. He was initially taken to St. Clare Hospital in Baraboo but was later transferred to the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison.

Reports say that two planes were returning from Florida when the second plane crashed into a field while trying to land. An airport manager said the man is an accomplished pilot, and that the crash was probably due to strong winds from a storm blowing in.
