Central Wisconsin's spring thaw usually occurs in late March or early April, but recent rainfalls could cause Wisconsin rivers to increase earlier this
year. Water company NewPage Corporation urges people to use extreme caution near Wisconsin River dams, one of which is located in Stevens Point. The heavier flows associated with the thaw can create dangerous situations above and below the five dams along the Wisconsin River, officials say. Even slight rainfall can cause dangerous currents and higher water levels, which could be hazardous for boaters.
Officials warn boaters to stay especially far from the dams when the flood gates are open, because in those situations, flows can capsize a boat no matter its size. Many accidents can occur in these conditions, and the company will close the boat ramp if the water situation becomes too
