Maple Leaf Foods Issues Recall

Posted on Friday, August 22nd, 2008 at 3:08 am

This past Wednesday, Maple Leaf Foods announced that it is expanding a recall on packaged meat products that were manufactured in Toronto at its Bartor Road facility.  This recall was taken as a precautionary measure, as some products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Foods contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a food borne illness that can attack the central nervous system and cause gastroenteritis.  Individuals with weakened immune systems are particularly susceptible to these medical complications (including young children or infants, the elderly, and pregnant women).

A number of Sure Slice meat products produced at the Barton Road facility tested positive for small traces of Listeria monocytogenes.  Maple Leaf Foods has issued a recall of all products produced on two of their manufacturing lines (going back to June 2nd) and is temporarily going to close the plant to ensure that the facility is safe and clean.

Family Enraged Over Pharmacist’s Punishment

Posted on Friday, August 15th, 2008 at 5:08 am

A Florida family is enraged over the penalty given to a pharmacy assistant who prescribed the wrong dosage of medicine for their 3-year-old boy—a mistake that claimed his life last October.

Sebastian Ferrero was given ten times the correct amount of a growth drug that he needed.  The Shands Hospital pharmacist responsible for the mistake was penalized with only a fine, a decision that Ferrero’s parents found more than unacceptable.

Pharmacist Edna Irizarry was fined $1,000 for her mistake, plus an additional $2,400 in investigative costs.  Her punishment also requires that she attend an eight-hour course on how to fill prescriptions.

While the Ferreros have received an $850,000 settlement from Shands Hospital, they are still angered that harsher punishments have not been brought against the pharmacist for her mistakes.  They are appealing to the governor in the hopes that he will launch an investigation.

The family plans to use the money from their settlement with Shands Hospital to help build a new Children’s Hospital in Gainesville.

North Texas Bus Investigations to Begin

Posted on Monday, August 11th, 2008 at 6:08 am

Federal regulators will be meeting August 11th to investigate the details of a bus accident in North Texas that resulted in the death of 17 of the bus’ passengers.  The owner of the bus company, Angel de la Torre, and his lawyer agreed to meet representatives of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration in Houston to discuss details of the accident.

One topic of investigation that federal regulators will be sure to investigate is the destination of the bus in question.  Mr. Torre was hired to take a group of church members to Carthage, Missouri.  However, his bus companies, Angel Tours and Iguala Busmex, had been barred from leaving the state of Texas.  There is also uncertainty as to whether Mr. Torre’s $5 million insurance policy will be able to transfer to the families of the victims.  If not, the victims’ families could potentially receive no compensation.
