Head Injuries: Concussion

Many people underestimate the repercussions of having a concussion. Most people will experience a concussion once in their lifetime and not suffer any long-term effects; however, undergoing several concussions may cause brain damage, resulting in a number of serious illnesses. Concussions are a type of brain trauma caused by head contact with a significant force.

If you have suffered serious side-effects from a concussion caused by another party’s negligence or recklessness, you may have grounds for filing a legal claim. Causes of Concussion

Concussions occur when your head makes impact with a strong force of resistance. This can happen in a number of ways, but some of the more common causes for concussions include:

  • Car accidents
  • Contact sports, such as football or hockey
  • Falling objects
  • Assault
  • Slipping and falling

While virtually anything could cause a concussion, the symptoms remain consistent regardless of the cause. If you have experienced one or more of the following symptoms following a head injury, you may be the victim of a concussion:

  • Loss of consciousness
  • Severe headache
  • Memory loss
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Confusion
  • Unequally sized pupils

If you or someone you love has sustained a concussion, contact your healthcare provider immediately for advice on what to do. If a person experiences more than one concussion, their risk for serious injury increases. In many cases, brain dysfunctions such as epilepsy may be brought on by repeated head trauma.
